Dirty Politics in Nebraska. . .

(Adapted from Jane Flemming Kleeb of the Young Voter PAC's blog at FutureMajority.com)

Candidates in Nebraska are getting dirty. . . in rivers and parks that need to be cleaned up.  Come meet some of the candidates running for office in Nebraska that are taking part in new brand of politics—the politics of service.

The candidates talk about what service means to them, why young voters are so important this election and what each of us can do to take a stand as a generation. Democrats Work is a national organization, founded by two young people Thomas Bates and James Carter, that encourages individuals and campaigns to live and show their Democratic values through service.  A chapter was started in Nebraska by Natalie Benson.

Candidates getting dirty in Nebraska include: Heath Mello, State Legislature (NE-05), Jeremy Nordquist, State Legislature (NE-07), Jim Esch, U.S. House of Representatives (NE-02), and Scott Kleeb, U.S. Senate.

Democrats Work at the Democratic National Convention in Denver . . .

It was just announced that Democrats Work is taking a lead role in making service an integral part of the Convention in Denver. Democrats Work is helping to coordinate a Delegate Service Day at service sites throughout the Denver metro area on Wednesday, August 27th. Projects will range from canned food sorting to neighborhood cleanups and tree plantings. These events will allow delegates to both contribute to and celebrate the people and organizations making positive change and strengthening communities in the city hosting this historic Convention. Good times!

Serve with the General - And the winner is . . .

UPDATE: Check out the story about the contest in today's Roll Call: Clark: You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.

Tens of thousands of votes were cast. People from coast to coast answered the call and let us know that they wanted to serve with the General.  Voters in our final five districts – CA-04, CO-04, MN-03, NC-10, and WA-08 – all showed that they are well-organized and ready to face the challenges in their districts. People are tired of politics as usual and want a new politics of service - where what you do every day in your community is just as important as what you do on election day.

It was a see-saw battle until the end.  All of the districts were in first place at one time or another.  A late push in the country’s largest state was the difference. Democrats Work and WesPAC are pleased to announce that General Wes Clark is heading to California's Fourth District to work side-by-side with local Democrats and Congressional candidate Charlie Brown!

The "Serve with the General" service project will be announced soon.  Check back soon for details. In the meantime, sign up to volunteer at events in your community, let us know about Democratic service events in your neighborhood, and support the work of Democrats Work with a contribution.

Thank you for your support and hard work!

Democrats Work in the News - Florida Progressive Radio and Roll Call . . .

Executive Director Thomas Bates spoke with Florida Progressive Radio about the origins and mission of Democrats Work.
You can also read the op-ed that Thomas wrote with Democrats Work co-founder Jason Carter for Roll Call last week: The Politics of -------: Defining America’s Politics in 2008.

Democrats Help Victims Recover From Tornadoes . . .

Democrats Work helped mobilize over 30 Arkansas Young Democrats to help the recovery efforts in Clinton, Arkansas. Thank you to the volunteers who helped residents dig out from the devastating storms.

Read the story at Today's THV.com, and don't miss the video that aired on the evening news.

There is one part of the story where we see it differently than the press. The anchor said, "They are college students with a passion for politics. The Young Democrats of Arkansas decided to put their politics aside and unite in an effort to help tornado victims." We don't think that politics is something you put aside when you decide to unite and help people. We think that is exactly what the politics of service is all about.
